Plac Wolności (Freedom Square) dates back to the 19th century, to the time of the industrial development of the city of Łódź, now the fourth largest city in Poland. For years, the square had been relegated to the role of municipal car park. Recently, however, like many of the city’s other open spaces, it has undergone renovation aimed at making it more welcoming and functional for its inhabitants. The resulting space, designed by the MamArchitekci studio, accentuates the symmetry of the original project and the main north-south and east-west axes, enhancing the monument at its centre. Patches of greenery have been introduced into the new square, containing plants that will grow and change the colours and appearance of the place according to the season, together with lots of benches, extending an invitation to all the city’s inhabitants, of all ages, to enjoy the space on a daily basis.
The project also includes new lighting, designed by Xeno Lighting Concept. The street lamps along the square’s entire perimeter have been outfitted with Duomo 4.0 projectors with built-in 230Vac power supply. Duomo 4.0 is suitable for lighting both large areas of street furniture and architectural details. Here, projectors have been selected with different optics (43° - 63° - 18°x44° - 44°x18°) and with honeycomb louvres and DALI control, and are directed towards the buildings overlooking the large, regenerated area and towards the central statue. The installation bracket slides along the entire length of the fixture, enabling a versatile use and allowing the projectors to be adjusted to fit in tight spaces. The anthracite finish allows the fixtures to blend perfectly with the street lamps of Freedom Square.
